Takaichi re-elected as Japanese Prime Minister

Sanae Takaichi was re-elected as Japanese Prime Minister after the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won a convincing victory in the early elections.

She won the support of 354 members of the lower house of parliament, which has the final say, even though the vote also takes place in the upper house.

The party secured a more than two-thirds majority in the 465-member parliament, which will allow the government to override any veto by the upper house.

Takaichi wants to use her strong mandate primarily to strengthen the country's defense capabilities and support the economy. Her second government will retain the same ministers as before, indicating an emphasis on continuity. The last time the Japanese government had such a significant majority was in 2017 under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
