EU Commission calls on Orbán to unblock billions for Ukraine
The European Commission has urged Hungary and other member states to honour the political agreement reached at the December summit and approve a €90 billion loan for Ukraine for 2026 and 2027, Jevropejska pravda writes.
According to Commission spokesman Balázs Ujvári, the agreement at leaders’ level was unanimous and was subsequently translated into legislative proposals by the Commission. Brussels therefore expects Budapest to fulfil its commitment and not block final approval of the aid package intended to cover Kyiv’s budgetary and military needs.
Hungary, however, has announced that it will block the loan and will not revise its position until Ukraine resumes the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline.
In the meantime, Kyiv has offered an alternative by proposing the use of the Odessa–Brody pipeline for deliveries to Hungary and Slovakia.
