Macron: US court ruling on tariffs shows strength of democracy

French President Emmanuel Macron has responded to the US Supreme Court’s decision declaring President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs unlawful. According to Macron, the ruling demonstrates that a functioning democracy requires checks and balances and respect for the rule of law.

He made the remarks during a visit to an agricultural fair in Paris, where he was asked about Friday’s court decision in the United States.

Macron said the existence of an independent Supreme Court was proof of the importance of institutional checks and balances. At the same time, he indicated that France would have to respond pragmatically to the new 10 per cent global tariff announced by Trump.

Paris intends to continue exporting its products – from agricultural produce and luxury goods to aircraft and related industries.

The French president called for a measured approach and stressed that the guiding principle in international trade should be reciprocity rather than unilateral action.
