CDU supports social media ban for under-14-teenagers
At a party- conference in Stuttgart, Germany's ruling conservatives from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) supported a ban on social media for children under 14 and stricter age verification for teenagers.
At the same time, they called on Chancellor Friedrich Merz to impose fines on platforms that violate the rules and to harmonize age limits within the EU. According to the proposal, special protection for minors should exist until the age of 16.
Similar restrictions are also being considered by other countries, such as Spain, France, and the UK.
Europe is thus increasing pressure on technology companies, which may cause tension with the United States. President Donald Trump has already threatened tariffs and sanctions if the regulations affect American companies.
