Trump wants to send a hospital ship to Greenland

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump said he was working with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to send a hospital ship to Greenland, which is Danish territory and which Trump has sought to acquire in the past.

He announced the plan on social media shortly before a dinner with Republican governors at the White House, where he sat next to Landry. "Together with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we will send a great hospital ship to Greenland to take care of the many sick people who are not being cared for there. It's on its way!!!" Trump wrote.

Neither the White House nor the governor's office responded to questions about whether Denmark or Greenland requested the ship and to whom the aid is intended.

Danish King Frederik visited Greenland again last week to demonstrate unity with the territory after months of tension caused by Trump's efforts to buy the island. The US, Denmark, and Greenland recently negotiated a settlement of the situation.

Trump's statement came after the Danish command evacuated a crew member of a US submarine near Nuuk. It is unclear whether this is related to his announcement. The US Navy has two hospital ships, Mercy and Comfort, but neither is stationed in Louisiana.
