Orbán convened a meeting of the Security Council
According to the Index portal, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has convened the Energy Security Council. The reason is a situation he described as "Ukrainian energy blackmail." Since January 27, Russian oil has not been flowing to Hungary through the Druzhba pipeline.
The government claims that there are no technical obstacles and that the halt in transit is a political decision by Kyiv aimed at putting pressure on Budapest in connection with Ukraine's accession to the European Union and the issue of aid.
Hungary responded by halting oil exports to Ukraine, releasing part of its strategic reserves, and blocking €90 billion in aid. The European Commission convened an extraordinary meeting on security of supply. Russian gas has not been flowing into the country for almost a month.
According to a report prepared for the government, which refers to intelligence information, the Ukrainian leadership deliberately prepared the suspension of supplies as a political tool. The document states that the damage in the Brody area in the Lviv region does not justify a longer shutdown and that the system would allow transit to resume.
The dispute also affected Croatia, which does not support the transport of Russian oil through the Adria pipeline to Hungary or Slovakia. MOL stated that Adria is only a supplementary route and its capacity would allow refineries to operate at approximately 80 percent.
