EU puts US trade deal on hold over Trump tariff plans

The European Union is preparing to suspend ratification of a trade agreement with the United States, Bloomberg reports. The move reflects uncertainty surrounding President Donald Trump’s new tariff programme, the details of which Brussels has yet to receive.

The EU is therefore seeking further clarification from the US administration, including concrete information on the planned measures.

Željana Zovko, the European People’s Party’s chief negotiator on the agreement, said the EU currently has ‘no other option’ but to postpone the approval process. She added that trade conditions must first be clarified in order to avoid potential economic risks.

The European People’s Party is the largest political group in the European Parliament, and its stance could significantly influence the next steps.
