Canada stands up to US pressure as it prepares aid for Cuba
Canada has announced that it is preparing an aid plan for Cuba, which is facing a severe fuel shortage following the tightening of US sanctions.
In recent weeks, President Donald Trump’s administration has blocked oil shipments to the island, including those from Venezuela, causing food and transport prices to soar and leading to widespread power cuts.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand did not specify concrete measures, but said Ottawa was closely monitoring the situation and was concerned about the deterioration of humanitarian conditions. The UN issued a similar warning, stating that the energy shortage could escalate into a broader crisis.
Tensions between Washington and Ottawa are also deepening on other fronts, from tariffs to Canada’s foreign policy direction. Trump declared that Cuba would ‘soon fail’.
