Vatican and Microsoft unveil Michelangelo font
The Vatican and Microsoft have unveiled a new digital font entitled ‘Michelangelus’, designed to replicate the handwriting of the Renaissance master Michelangelo Buonarroti. The project was launched to mark the 400th anniversary of the consecration of St Peter’s Basilica and is the result of a collaboration between the technology company and the basilica’s administration, according to EWTN News.
Following extensive palaeographic research, the team succeeded in transferring his characteristic elongated strokes and harmonious calligraphy into digital form.
The font will be available in the latest versions of Microsoft Office, enabling millions of users to compose documents in the style of the architect of the iconic dome of St Peter’s Basilica. Cardinal Mauro Gambetti described the initiative as a symbolic link between Renaissance genius and the digital age.
