No electric Lamborghini as brand backs hybrids
Lamborghini has halted development of its planned electric sports model, the Lanzador, which had been due to reach the market in 2028. The carmaker’s chief executive, Stephan Winkelmann, justified the decision by citing weak demand, saying that interest in a purely electric supercar is ‘almost zero’. Investing in such a project would amount to an expensive experiment with no guarantee of a return, The Times reports.
The Italian manufacturer is therefore adjusting its strategy, focusing on plug-in hybrids while aiming to retain combustion engines ‘as long as possible’.
According to the company, customers continue to favour the sound and performance of traditional engines, which they regard as integral to the driving experience. At the same time, Lamborghini achieved record sales of more than 10,000 vehicles in 2025.
Although the European Union plans to ban the registration of new cars with combustion engines from 2035, exemptions apply to small manufacturers. Lamborghini is seeking to extend those exemptions and does not rule out electric models – but only when the market is ready.
