Pope Leo XIV to make first major foreign tour to Africa
In April 2026, Pope Leo XIV will embark on his first major foreign tour, visiting four African countries – Algeria, Angola, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon. According to the Vatican, the trip signals that Africa is a priority for the Church, as the Catholic community is growing fastest there and now accounts for around a fifth of all believers.
The Pope is expected to draw large crowds, address issues of development and interfaith dialogue, and highlight regions facing political and economic challenges.
The visit to Algeria is of particular significance – Leo will be the first pope to travel to the country, which is associated with the legacy of St Augustine. Before heading to Africa, he will visit Monaco and Spain in June.
In the autumn, he is likely to travel to Peru, where he once served as a missionary.
