Kansas revokes gender changes on driving licences and birth certificates

The state of Kansas has revoked driving licences and amended birth certificates issued to transgender residents who had changed the sex marker on those documents. The measure took effect on Thursday under a new law and affects more than a thousand people.

Those affected must change their sex designation back to that recorded at birth. The law prohibits any comparable amendments in the future. They are also required to cover the cost of new driving licences.

The law further requires transgender individuals to use bathrooms and changing facilities in government-owned or leased buildings in accordance with their sex at birth.

After returning to office, President Donald Trump issued several executive orders, including a directive that the federal government would recognise only two sexes and a measure concerning the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sport.
