Pope calls on priests not to use AI in sermons

Pope Leo XIV called on priests not to succumb to the temptation to prepare sermons using artificial intelligence, including tools such as ChatGPT. At a meeting with the clergy of the Diocese of Rome, he emphasised that true preaching is not just a well-written text, but above all the sharing of personal faith.

According to Vatican News, he said that artificial intelligence cannot convey a living experience of God or an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ.

The Pope compared the human brain to muscles, which weaken without use. Therefore, according to him, priests should ‘exercise’ their own intelligence and not let it be replaced by technology. At the same time, he appealed for a life of prayer and time spent with the Lord, not for the routine and quick fulfilment of duties.

This is not his first warning. He has previously warned that artificial intelligence may pose a risk to human dignity, social justice, and the labour market.
