UN Security Council to meet on Saturday
Tensions in the Middle East have reached the UN following US and Israeli attacks on Iran. The Security Council is to hold an emergency meeting at the request of Russia and China. Both countries have described the events as unprovoked aggression and signalled a firm stance towards Washington and Tel Aviv.
According to a Russian statement, they will call for an immediate end to ‘illegal and escalating’ actions and a return to diplomacy.
The meeting will be chaired by Britain, and Secretary-General António Guterres is expected to address the session. He has already warned that the current military escalation and Iranian retaliation are undermining international peace, while urging all parties to avoid further escalation.
