Cooperation between the European Union and Switzerland has been expanded
After the EU Council gave its approval last week, representatives of the EU and Switzerland formally signed the set of agreements on Tuesday. The package includes revisions to existing accords governing Switzerland’s access to the EU single market and agricultural trade, as well as new agreements covering health and electricity cooperation.
The deal also provides for Switzerland’s participation in parts of the EU space programme. In addition, Switzerland has committed to making a permanent and fair financial contribution to support the EU’s economic and social cohesion.
The agreements mark a significant step in stabilising and deepening bilateral relations, which have faced uncertainty in recent years. However, the package still requires the approval of the European Parliament and the Swiss authorities before it can enter into force.
In Switzerland, the final decision will be subject to a national referendum, giving voters the ultimate say on the future framework of relations with the European Union.
