Warsaw wants its own nuclear weapon

Poland wants to be autonomous in the field of nuclear deterrence in the future, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced. According to him, Europe is working on building its own capabilities independently of the United States and Warsaw wants to actively participate in this process.

On Monday, Tusk announced that Poland is negotiating with France and a group of its closest European allies on an advanced nuclear deterrence programme. On Tuesday, before a government meeting, he said that the country is investing heavily in future nuclear power plants and does not want to remain passive on the issue of nuclear security in a military context, which means that the Poles want to have their own nuclear weapon.

‘We will cooperate with our allies. As our capacities increase, we will strive to prepare Poland for autonomous action in this matter,’ he added, noting that negotiations with France concern a proposal for a modern nuclear deterrence system and that they are also consulting with other countries that have been invited to participate in the project.

Tusk also wants to raise the issue at the March summit on nuclear energy in Paris, where he plans to hold talks with President Emmanuel Macron and other European partners.
