Iran threatens Europe if it joins US military action
Iran has warned that it may attack European cities if European countries join the US military operation against Tehran. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has stated that it would consider such a move an ‘act of war’. European governments are therefore stepping up security measures, according to the Politico website.
Iranian drones have already struck Cyprus, where one damaged the British RAF Akrotiri base. In response, the UK, France and Greece have sent fighter jets, warships and helicopters to the area to protect the island.
Iran possesses medium-range missiles with a range of approximately 2,000 kilometres, which could reach parts of south-eastern Europe. Tehran has also invested in the development of drones that could be used to attack military targets or infrastructure.
Experts also point to other threats, such as cyberattacks and operations carried out by intelligence networks and criminal groups. NATO has warned that the Iranian regime poses a security threat to Europe.
