Tehran residents: ‘apocalypse’ as food and medicine run out

On Tuesday, the US and Israeli air forces continued extensive air strikes on Iran. According to witnesses, hospitals, residential buildings and schools in Tehran were hit, with residents describing the situation as ‘apocalyptic’. Millions of civilians remain in the city under continuous bombardment while supplies of food and medicine are rapidly running out.

By Tuesday morning, the Iranian Red Crescent had recorded 787 deaths in 153 cities. Since Saturday, when the attacks began, it has registered 1,039 strikes in 504 locations. Nearly 200 children are among the victims.

Neighbourhoods in central Tehran were also hit, including the area around Revolution Square and the Haft-e-Tir district. Images from the scene show destroyed apartment buildings and rescue workers searching through the rubble. The strikes also destroyed a hospital in the city of Bushehr, from which rescue workers evacuated newborns.

According to local sources, hospitals are unable to cope with the influx of wounded. Doctors are working non-stop and some are operating without electricity. Many residents are trying to flee the city, but highways are blocked by massive traffic jams.

The attacks have also triggered a humanitarian crisis. Some parts of Tehran are running out of food and prices are rising sharply. In addition, Iran has significantly restricted internet access, making it difficult to coordinate rescue efforts and obtain information.
