Trump wants role in choosing Iran’s next leader

US President Donald Trump has said he wants to be personally involved in selecting Iran’s next leader following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

In an interview with Axios, he said the son of the late leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was not an acceptable candidate. ‘We want someone who will bring harmony and peace to Iran,’ Trump said.

Trump compared the situation to Venezuela, where he claimed the United States had played a role in political changes. ‘I have to be involved in the appointment, like with Delcy Rodríguez in Venezuela,’ he added.

Iran has not yet officially announced a new supreme leader. The decision will be made by a body of clerics known as the Assembly of Experts.
