Kosovo faces early elections as president dissolves parliament
Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani dissolved parliament on Friday and called early elections. The country now faces its third vote in just over a year. The move came a day after MPs failed to elect a new head of state within the constitutional deadline.
Parliament had until midnight on Thursday to elect a president but failed to do so. Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s ruling party, Vetevendosje, was unable to secure the necessary quorum or win opposition support for its candidate, Foreign Minister Glauk Konjufca.
Osmani justified the decision by saying that a parliament unable to elect a president cannot prolong the stalemate indefinitely. The opposition had long called for an agreement on a consensus candidate, yet Kurti continued to push for his nominee, Konjufca.
Kosovo already experienced an early election at the end of December after it failed to form a government following the February 2025 parliamentary elections.
