Iran mocks US plan to escort tankers in Strait of Hormuz
The conflict in the Middle East has significantly disrupted shipping and energy exports through the key route in recent days. Donald Trump has indicated that the US Navy could escort tankers passing through the strategic strait if necessary.
Revolutionary Guard spokesman Alimohammad Naini responded ironically. ‘Iran strongly welcomes the escort of oil tankers and the presence of US forces in the Strait of Hormuz. By the way, we are waiting for their presence,’ he said, according to the state agency.
At the same time, he warned Washington to recall earlier incidents before taking such a step. ‘We advise the Americans to remember the fire on the American supertanker Bridgeton in 1987 and the tankers that were recently hit,’ Naini said.
According to available information, at least nine ships have been attacked since the start of the US-Israeli strikes on Iran. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has also ordered ships not to cross the strategic Strait of Hormuz, further increasing tensions on global energy markets.
