Trump praises Meloni for support in Iran conflict

US President Donald Trump praised Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her readiness to support the United States and Israel in the conflict with Iran, the Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported on Sunday.

In a telephone interview with the newspaper on Saturday, Trump described Meloni as a ‘great leader’. He added that she ‘always tries to help’.

Italy plans to send air defence assistance to Gulf countries in response to Iranian air strikes, Meloni announced on Thursday.

An Italian warship is preparing to sail to Cyprus as part of a joint European mission to protect the island after it was targeted by an Iranian attack, a navy spokesman said on Friday.
