Trump: no bills until election legislation passes

US President Donald Trump said he will not sign any further legislation until Congress passes election-related measures. He made the statement on Sunday on his social media platform Truth Social.

He was referring to the SAVE America Act, which the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed in February. However, the legislation faces an uncertain fate in the Senate, where Republicans hold a majority but its approval is not guaranteed.

The bill would require proof of US citizenship when registering to vote in the November congressional elections. It would also introduce criminal penalties for election officials who register voters without the required documentation.

Democrats have sharply criticised the legislation, arguing that it is an attempt to restrict voting rights and weaken their chances in the elections. The dispute comes at a time when several analyses suggest that Democrats could win a majority in the House of Representatives.
