Driver detained after crash into barrier near White House

A security incident occurred near the White House in Washington on Wednesday morning when a van crashed into a protective barrier at Lafayette Square. The Metropolitan Police said they were called to the scene by the US Secret Service at approximately 6.37 a.m. local time, according to the New York Post.

Agents detained the driver immediately after the incident and took him in for questioning. According to available information, no injuries were reported. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the driver or details about the vehicle, and it remains unclear what charges may follow.

The area north of the White House, where tourists and federal employees frequently gather, was temporarily closed by police, who blocked off several surrounding streets.

According to Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, access to the area will remain restricted until security teams complete their investigation.
