Three arrested after blast at US embassy in Oslo

Norwegian police have arrested three suspects in connection with a bomb attack on the US embassy in Oslo early on Sunday morning, police prosecutor Christian Hatlo said.

According to the authorities, an improvised explosive device detonated, damaging the entrance to the embassy’s consular section. No one was injured. The explosion occurred around 1 a.m. at the embassy compound in western Oslo.

Police said the detained individuals are suspected of carrying out a terrorist attack. The investigation is ongoing. On Monday, officers released images of one of the suspects. The pictures show a person wearing a hood, dark clothing and carrying a bag or backpack. The individual’s face is not visible.

Investigators are also assessing the incident in the context of the current security situation and tensions linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

After the explosion, the Norwegian government contacted representatives of the US embassy and described the attack as an unacceptable act. Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide emphasised that the security of diplomatic missions is a priority for the country.
