FBI warns of possible Iranian drone attack on US west coast
US President Donald Trump said he is not concerned about possible retaliatory attacks by Iran on US territory. He was responding to a question from journalists following a warning from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) about a potential drone attack on the US west coast.
According to ABC News, the FBI warned police departments in California that Iran could launch a retaliatory attack using unmanned aircraft in response to US strikes. The warning says Tehran allegedly attempted to prepare a drone attack from an unidentified vessel off the US coast in early February.
The targets were to be unspecified sites in California if the United States launched military strikes against Iran. However, federal investigators noted that they had no further information about the timing, method or specific targets of a possible attack.
The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran nearly two weeks ago, sparking armed conflict in the Persian Gulf region. Tehran subsequently carried out retaliatory attacks after the strikes killed senior Iranian officials, including the country’s supreme leader.
According to a report by the US Department of Homeland Security, Iran and its allies are likely to pose a threat of targeted attacks on US territory, but a large-scale physical attack is considered unlikely.
