Iran war strains Patriot missile supply for Ukraine
There is growing concern in Kyiv that the war with Iran could deprive Ukraine of part of its key air defence capabilities, according to Politico.
According to available data, the US and its partners in the Persian Gulf are using large quantities of Patriot missiles to intercept Iranian ballistic missiles and drones. A report by Bloomberg Intelligence estimates that the US and its partners in the region have used up to 1,000 missiles since the start of the war.
However, Ukraine desperately needs the same systems to defend itself against Russian attacks.
European leaders and American politicians warn that Washington will naturally prioritise its own security needs in the coming months, which could slow or limit deliveries to Kyiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also admitted that the conflict in the Middle East will reduce Ukraine’s chances of obtaining more missiles.
The problem is further exacerbated by slow production. Although Lockheed Martin plans to significantly increase output, it will take several years to expand capacity. Last year, the company produced only 600 Patriot interceptor missiles.
