Poland investigates possible Iranian link to cyberattack
A cyberattack on Poland’s National Centre for Nuclear Research has been successfully thwarted. According to the government, there are indications the attack may have been linked to Iran, but authorities also warn that these clues may be deliberately misleading.
Minister for digital affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski told TVN24+ television the incident occurred in recent days. According to him, it was an attempt to breach the centre’s security systems, which was successfully stopped.
According to the minister, initial analyses suggest the points of entry for the attack may be linked to Iran. ‘When the final information is available and the secret services have verified it, we will be able to confirm it,’ Gawkowski added.
The Polish National Centre for Nuclear Research is dedicated to research in the field of nuclear energy, subatomic physics and related disciplines. Poland does not possess nuclear weapons and is currently preparing to build its first nuclear power plant.
Local authorities also noted that the country has faced an increased number of cyberattacks since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
