Germany’s emissions barely fell in 2025

Germany recorded only a minimal decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in 2025. According to data from the German Environment Agency, the country emitted approximately 649 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, representing a decrease of just 0.1 per cent compared with the previous year. In absolute terms, this amounts to a reduction of less than one million tonnes.

This marks a significant slowdown compared with 2024, when emissions fell by 3.4 per cent. Certain industrial sectors contributed most to the slight decline, while emissions in transport and the building sector increased.

The German Ministry of the Environment, together with the Environment Agency, stated that the goal of reducing emissions by 2030 remains achievable.

However, this will require a much faster decline in the coming years. According to estimates, emissions should decrease by an average of approximately 42 million tonnes per year between 2026 and 2030.
