Berlin doubts gains from expanding EU Red Sea mission

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Sunday that he is sceptical about a possible expansion of the European Union’s naval mission, Aspides, into the Strait of Hormuz.

Wadephul said the mission, aimed at assisting commercial ships passing through the Red Sea, had been ‘ineffective’.

‘And that is why I am very sceptical that extending the Aspides mission to the Strait of Hormuz would bring greater security,’ he said in an interview with the German television station ARD.
