Trump warns NATO over ‘bleak future’ without Hormuz action

US President Donald Trump warned NATO allies that the alliance faces a ‘very bleak future’ if they do not help ensure the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The waterway has been effectively closed since the escalation of the conflict with Iran, after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iranian targets more than two weeks ago.

According to Trump, all countries that benefit from the key maritime route – including China, France, Japan and the United Kingdom – should participate in protecting it.

Washington expects, in particular, the deployment of warships, minesweepers and equipment capable of countering drones and naval mines. Trump also hinted that he might postpone his planned trip to Beijing if China does not show a willingness to cooperate.

He also criticised the United Kingdom’s response, saying that it offered assistance only after the US had weakened Iran’s military capabilities. Roughly one fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

The president also threatened further strikes on Iran’s oil infrastructure, including the export terminal on Kharg Island.
