Germany pushes back on NATO role in Hormuz security
Germany sees no role for NATO in resolving the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said in Brussels on Monday before a meeting of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council.
‘I do not see NATO taking any decision on this matter or assuming responsibility for the Strait of Hormuz. If that were the case, the relevant NATO bodies would deal with it accordingly,’ Wadephul said.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump has stepped up pressure on European allies to help protect the strategic waterway. He warned that NATO faces a ‘very bad’ future if member states do not come to Washington’s aid.
