Vance trusts Trump on the issue of war with Iran
US Vice President JD Vance expressed support on Monday for President Donald Trump’s handling of the war in Iran, marking his first unequivocal public backing since the conflict began on February 28.
Speculation about possible disagreements had been fuelled by Trump’s recent remarks that Vance, who served in the US Navy two decades ago, is ‘philosophically a bit different’ and ‘perhaps less enthusiastic’ about the attack on Iran.
Vance said on Monday that the president has long held the view that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon, a position he shares.
‘I think one big difference is that we have an intelligent president, whereas in the past we’ve had stupid presidents, and I believe President Trump will handle this task, do a good job for the American people and ensure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated,’ he said.
In early 2023, Vance wrote in a commentary for the Wall Street Journal that Trump’s most significant foreign policy achievement was that he did not start any wars between 2017 and 2021.
