Taiwan remains a priority, U.S. officials say
The United States has not changed its policy towards Taiwan or slowed arms shipments, officials from the Donald Trump administration said, even as an intensive military campaign against Iran is under way. The position was confirmed during a congressional hearing by representatives of both the State Department and the defence establishment.
According to the statements, Taiwan remains a priority – particularly in the context of growing military pressure from China, which regularly demonstrates its power in the region.
Although concerns have been raised that simultaneous conflicts could weaken US defence industry capabilities, officials insist the opposite is the case. The United States is even trying to accelerate deliveries, which have long lagged behind schedule. An internal directive favouring Taiwan over other customers also remains in force.
The upcoming record $14 billion arms package may also be linked to Donald Trump’s postponed visit to Beijing, where he had been expected to hold sensitive talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Adding to the political tensions is a dispute between Republicans and Democrats over the circumvention of Congress in approving arms deals.
