Trump faces backlash as cost-of-living concerns deepen

Rising fuel prices in the United States are beginning to place a noticeable strain on household budgets, and the situation is likely to worsen, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Some 55 per cent of Americans say they are already feeling the impact, with one in five reporting a significant hit to their finances. Prices have risen sharply following US and Israeli strikes on Iran and the subsequent escalation of the conflict, which has disrupted global oil supplies, including traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

As many as 87 per cent of respondents expect petrol prices to increase further in the near term. The tensions are also prompting consideration in Washington of military measures to secure oil routes, a step that could risk further escalation.

The economic fallout is also being felt politically. A majority of Americans disapprove of how President Donald Trump is handling the cost of living. His approval rating on the issue has fallen to 29 per cent, which may weigh on the forthcoming election.

The poll was conducted online among 1,545 adults across the United States.
