Iran calls for UN debate over deadly school strike

Iran has called for an urgent session of the United Nations Human Rights Council following a deadly attack on a primary school on the first day of US-Israeli operations against the country. In a letter, Iran’s ambassador Ali Bahreini described the incident as a serious violation of children’s rights and an assault on education and the future of the community.

Tehran says 168 children, most of them girls, were killed in two missile strikes on the Shajareh Tayyebeh school.

Responsibility for the attack remains unclear. According to earlier reporting by Reuters, US military investigators have acknowledged the possible involvement of US forces, but the inquiry remains ongoing and has been escalated within the Pentagon.

The situation is further complicated by a parallel initiative by Gulf states, which are calling for a separate meeting on Iran’s attacks on civilian and energy targets.
