Mullally installed as first female Archbishop of Canterbury

Sarah Mullally has been formally installed as Archbishop of Canterbury, becoming the first woman to hold the post.

At a ceremony at Canterbury Cathedral attended by Prince William and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, she began her public ministry as spiritual leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion, which has around 85 million members.

Mullally had already legally become the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury in January. Wednesday’s installation marked the symbolic start of her public ministry.

In her first address, she stressed the need for peace, referring to conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East and Sudan. She also called for truth, justice and compassion.
