Germany warns of economic fallout as it pushes for Iran peace
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Thursday that Germany could help to secure peace once a ceasefire is in place in the US–Israeli war with Iran.
‘This war is a disaster for the world economy. Its impact is now, after little more than two weeks, absolutely obvious,’ he warned.
Pistorius added that a diplomatic solution was needed ‘as soon as possible’. He directed the appeal in particular to Iran, but also to the United States. ‘Nobody has consulted us before, nobody has asked us before, this is not our war, and therefore we don’t want to be dragged into that war, to be absolutely clear,’ he said.
He also criticised the broader US approach. ‘There is no strategy, there is no clear objective, and the worst thing from my point of view is that there is no strategy to end the conflict.’
Instability in the Middle East, he said, would have consequences for the whole world. ‘And that is why we are ready to secure any peace,’ the minister said.
