One in five young Germans want to leave the country

More and more young Germans are considering leaving the country. According to the study ‘Youth in Germany 2026 – a future under pressure’, up to 21 per cent of those aged 14 to 29 plan to leave in search of better living conditions, while a further 41 per cent do not rule out the option.

The trend is driven chiefly by concerns over financial insecurity, unaffordable housing and the risk of poverty. Almost a quarter of young people are in debt and many report psychological strain – up to 29 per cent say they need professional help. The study also finds that 60 per cent report a dependence on smartphones.

The political climate is also a factor. Some young people on the left are discouraged by rising support for the right, while supporters of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) are likewise considering leaving.

Nevertheless, a majority say they are willing to work. At the same time, however, doubts are growing over whether it still pays to do so in Germany, chiefly because of economic uncertainty and concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on the labour market.
