Putin allies Kim, Lukashenko sign friendship agreement
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko have signed a friendship agreement in Pyongyang that both sides say will move relations into a ‘new phase’.
The meeting underscores deepening ties among the allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine and rising tensions with the West. Kim also criticised Western pressure on Belarus and outlined common positions on key issues.
However, Lukashenko’s visit also suggests an effort to balance diplomatically. Shortly beforehand, he held talks with an envoy of US President Donald Trump and released hundreds of political prisoners in exchange for a possible easing of sanctions.
The opposition in exile has described the encounter as a ‘meeting of the dictators’, saying it offers no benefit to ordinary Belarusians.
Both countries have long experience of sanctions and, despite limited trade, are united by Russia’s support, both military and political.
