US need not remain in NATO, says Trump

Donald Trump’s remarks have once again stirred debate over the future of NATO. The US President suggested that the US may not need to remain part of the alliance, arguing that European states have provided insufficient support in the conflict with Iran.

His comments come at a time when relations between Washington and Europe have already cooled following the unilateral US decision to attack Iran. Trump has also long criticised allies for low defence spending and repeatedly questioned the principle of collective security.

At the same time, his positions remain inconsistent – relations with some leaders improved last year, yet new disputes, including the Greenland controversy, have deepened mistrust. Initial reactions suggest his comments are fuelling concerns about a weakening of transatlantic cooperation.
