Germany to fund EV charging in residential buildings
The German Ministry of Transport is launching a €500 million programme to support charging infrastructure in residential buildings.
The aim is to improve access to charging for electric vehicles, particularly in existing properties, where millions of parking spaces are estimated to lack such facilities. The programme covers the cost of purchasing and installing wallboxes, technical equipment, grid connections and necessary building modifications.
Funding is divided among three groups – owner-occupier associations, smaller investors and large real estate companies. Support may reach up to €2,000 per parking space, depending on the type of charging. One condition, for example, is the electrification of at least 20 per cent of parking spaces.
Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder said the lack of domestic charging infrastructure was holding back the development of electromobility.
The programme forms part of a broader 2030 strategy to incentivise property owners to invest in infrastructure essential for the everyday use of electric cars.
