Rubio and Kallas clash over Russia at G7 meeting
At a meeting of G7 foreign ministers, there was, according to several sources, a sharp exchange between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and European Union High Representative Kaia Kallas, Axios reported.
During a discussion on the war in Ukraine, Kallas asked Rubio directly when the United States would toughen its stance on Russia, arguing that Moscow had long been unresponsive to efforts to end the conflict. She also referred to Rubio’s earlier remarks that the US might take tougher steps if Russia failed to cooperate.
Rubio reacted sharply, raising his voice and stressing that the US was doing its best – engaging with both sides while continuing military support for Ukraine.
The incident, according to diplomatic sources, highlights growing distrust between Washington and its European allies, who are increasingly concerned about the slow progress of peace talks and the shift of US attention to other conflicts, notably Iran.
Other ministers present sought to defuse the situation, and both sides later attempted to ease tensions.
Rubio, however, publicly denied any dispute.
