EU reports progress in US trade talks
EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič described talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer as ‘very positive’ and pointed to progress in the sensitive area of critical minerals.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of a World Trade Organization (WTO) gathering in Cameroon. In Šefčovič’s words, it confirmed the willingness of both sides to uphold agreements despite global turbulence. The discussion also touched on tariffs, which have been a source of tension in recent months, particularly following threats from President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, the EU has advanced legislation to fulfil commitments under the Turnberry agreement, while adding safeguards in case the US fails to honour its obligations. The compromise resulted in a 15 per cent tariff on most goods, preventing an escalation of the trade conflict between the two partners.
The US remains the EU’s largest export market.
At the same time, Brussels has signalled its intention to diversify trade relations and expand free trade agreements with other countries.
