Poland to build electronic barrier on Ukraine border

Poland plans to build a modern electronic barrier on its border with Ukraine to strengthen security and improve protection against illegal migration.

The project, worth approximately PLN 450 million, includes a sophisticated system of underground sensors, fibre-optic cables and thermal imaging camera towers that will continuously monitor the border area. The data will be evaluated in real time at a central border guard centre, allowing for rapid intervention in the event of suspicious activity.

However, funding for the project has not yet been fully secured, according to RMF24. Part of the financing was to come from the EU’s SAFE programme, but a presidential veto has complicated its implementation. The government is therefore seeking alternative sources and is in negotiations over how to proceed.

The construction of the barrier is linked to the security situation in the region, in particular the war in Ukraine and growing fears of subversive activity.

The Polish authorities stress that this is a precautionary step to protect the state.
