Spain bars US military overflights linked to Iran strikes
Spain has tightened its stance on US military operations against Iran, extending its opposition beyond the refusal to use joint bases to include restrictions on overflights.
Madrid has now closed its airspace to US aircraft involved in attacks, according to reports, signalling a further escalation in its response to the conflict.
Defence Minister Margarita Robles said Spain would not contribute 'in any way' to what the government views as a unilateral conflict that breaches international law.
According to El Pais, US military aircraft will be required to avoid Spanish airspace when travelling to the Middle East, although exceptions may be made in emergencies.
The decision reflects the broader position of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, one of the most outspoken critics in Europe of US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
The move is likely to add strain to relations with Washington. President Donald Trump has already hinted at possible trade repercussions after Spain declined to support the military campaign.
