Merz talks of repatriating 80 per cent of Syrian migrants

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has sought to clarify his remarks on the possible return of Syrian refugees after drawing criticism from politicians and economists.

He had initially suggested that about 80 per cent of Syrians living in Germany could return to their homeland within three years.

The estimate was met with scepticism. Critics argued that it was unrealistic and risked undermining integration efforts. Economists also warned that a large-scale departure could worsen labour shortages in certain sectors.

Merz later said the figure did not originate with him but with Syrian president Ahmad Shaara, adding that Germany recognises the challenges involved in any such scenario.
