US questions commitment to NATO

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has declined to unequivocally reaffirm Washington’s commitment to NATO’s collective defence principle, prompting concern among allies.

He said the decision ultimately rests with President Donald Trump, highlighting strains between the US and several European countries over the war against Iran.

Some states, including France, Italy and Spain, have refused to provide logistical support for US operations, which Washington regards as a lack of solidarity.

Experts warn that such remarks could erode confidence in NATO and potentially embolden Russia to test the alliance’s cohesion. Tensions between the US and Europe have meanwhile been building for years, from trade disputes to disagreements over Ukraine and broader security policy.
