Trump says he is seriously considering US withdrawal from NATO

US President Donald Trump has said he is seriously considering withdrawing the United States from NATO, citing frustration with European allies over their refusal to support US military action against Iran.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Trump criticised the alliance and suggested Washington's membership could be reconsidered. He has repeatedly described NATO as a 'paper tiger', adding: 'I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way.'

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also indicated that the United States would reassess its relationship with NATO after the conflict. In an interview with Al Jazeera, he criticised the lack of support from European countries, noting that several allies had declined to participate in operations against Iran.

Rubio pointed in particular to Spain, which refused to provide airspace or access to military bases.

At the same time, he acknowledged NATO's strategic value for the United States, highlighting its role in enabling the deployment of American forces and equipment around the world. Despite the criticism, Rubio described the alliance as an important instrument of US global operations.
