Moldova to leave Commonwealth of Independent States
Moldova’s parliament has approved the country’s withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States, established after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The proposal was backed by a majority of MPs and, once signed by President Maia Sandu, a year-long withdrawal process will begin.
The foreign ministry said the organisation no longer respects fundamental principles, particularly the territorial integrity of states. It cited Russia’s actions against Ukraine and Georgia, as well as its military presence in Moldova, as the reason, Moldpress reported.
At the same time, Chisinau expects to make financial savings, having previously contributed around €150,000 a year to the organisation’s budget. It intends to maintain relations with former partners through other forms of cooperation.
However, Moldova will retain some agreements, particularly in the social and economic spheres.
